Inside Hacienda Nápoles, The Opulent House Of Pablo Escobar

This is where visiting speedboats would have docked, and where heavily armed lookouts were posted. As with the larger structures, the individual chalet apartments have long since begun to deteriorate at the hands of the relentless Caribbean trade winds. For the people of Isla Grande, life carries on much as it did before Escobar arrived. Unsurprisingly, the drug kingpin, estimated to be one of the 10 richest men in the world in 1989, had a taste for things rare and slightly unusual. In building his mega-mansion, Escobar included a zoo, bull-fighting ring, and theme park–replete with big game animals he imported from Africa and life-size concrete dinosaurs.

Clowning for Novices: History and Practice With Rose Carver

Escobar and his cartel were also considered responsible for the deaths of over 4,000 people including numerous government officials, journalists, informants, and policemen. Valoppi is filming a documentary about the mansion and its connection to Escobar, who lived in South Florida in the 1980s. Authorities believe the property was used as a hideout for Escobar's henchmen and to unload tons of cocaine. Roberto is an affable man who was very attentive to museum visitors, but he glossed over the horrifying story of his brother, Pablo. The demolition of the museum has removed one more brick in the Escobar myth, enabling Medellín to begin eradicating this unsettling legacy. So many in the crowd were walking novels—or walking prestige-television series, if you prefer.

While some experts have recommended culling the hippos, others have called for sterilizing them to stop the breeding. Meanwhile, some of the local people have grown attached to the hippos over time — which may make it difficult for either of these efforts to move forward. In the 1982 Colombian parliamentary election, Escobar was elected as an alternate member of the Chamber of Representatives as part of the Liberal Party. Through this, he was responsible for community projects such as the construction of houses and football fields, which gained him popularity among the locals of the towns that he frequented. However, Escobar's political ambitions were thwarted by the Colombian and U.S. governments, who routinely pushed for his arrest, with Escobar widely believed to have orchestrated the Avianca Flight 203 and DAS Building bombings in retaliation.

The impact of Escobar lingers, just like his influence on Colombia as a whole. Scientists and conservationists are now going back and forth about what to do with the hippos, which many believe are an invasive species. In fact, they might even be changing the ecosystem, making life harder for native plants and animals in the country. Today, most of the hippos reside on or near the property of Hacienda Nápoles, but some have made their way into the Magdelena River basin, a major waterway that cuts through the western half of Colombia.

I should note that the room rates can vary widely depending on the season. Prices can start as low as $390 for the garden suites but generally are in the $575 range and spike to $700 in October and November. The beachfront suites are about $200 more on average, while rooms in the actual mansion will cost you at least $1,000.

Death

If you were to drive about 93 miles east of Medellín, Colombia, you would eventually make it to a town called Puerto Triunfo. However, Escobar was vilified by the Colombian and U.S. governments, who routinely stifled his political ambitions and pushed for his arrest, with Escobar widely believed to have orchestrated the DAS Building and Avianca Flight 203 bombings in retaliation. The stay is truly like no other, as Ana Prado Contii, a Brazilian luxury real estate broker, says it is often visited by A-list celebrities. Within the master ensuite, black walls and flooring fill the room and feature a rainfall shower, as well as "his and hers" sinks. Casa Malca was snapped up by Escobar in the 1970's, after the Mexican government decided to turn the town of Tulum into a holiday destination.

The mayor of Medellín is sick and tired of the world’s fascination with Pablo Escobar. Today, Napoles is a theme park, and descendants of Escobar’s hippos roam the towns and rivers nearby. Fueling all this curiosity is a relentless stream of narco television series, on Netflix, Nat Geo, Discovery, and other networks, that narrate Medellín’s history from the perspective of the perpetrators, not the victims.

This Is What Happened To Pablo Escobar's Colombia Estate

Hacienda Nápoles (Spanish for "Naples Estate") was an estate built and owned by Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar in Puerto Triunfo, Antioquia Department, Colombia, approximately 150 km (93 mi) east of Medellín and 249 km (155 mi) northwest of Bogotá. Following Escobar's death in 1993, many of the original buildings on the property were demolished or reconditioned for other uses. After the drug lord was shot and killed by Colombian police in 1993, the Escobar family found themselves at odds with the Colombian government over the ownership of Hacienda Nápoles. Unlike other famous theme parks, Hacienda Nápoles has quite a seedy history. After all, it was once the location of a Playboy Mansion-like cocaine palace — owned by the notorious Pablo Escobar.

Roberto, the cartel’s chief accountant, once decided that the best way to count the enormous amounts of cash coming in from drug sales was to weigh it on scales. Pablo Escobar, the son of a farmer and school teacher, led the Medellín drug cartel, which supplied an estimated 80 percent of the cocaine smuggled into the United States. Known as the wealthiest criminal in history, Escobar had an estimated known net worth of $25 to 30 billion dollars by the early ’90s. Unlike his brother Pablo, who was a fugitive until he was killed on a Medellín rooftop by Colombian special forces in 1993, Roberto turned himself in to the authorities twice — he saw no heroism in dying. The museum walls were covered with photos of cartel characters — Pinina, Tayson and Pablo himself — men who murdered hundreds of people before dying violently themselves. Roberto made it to old age — he’s now 75 — but he didn’t emerge unscathed.

Situated along the picturesque Caribbean coastline in Riviera Maya, Mexico, the luxurious hotel estate is said to have been home to the one and only Pablo Escobar. Alux is the biggest resource for luxury and fine-living enthusiasts in the world who share knowledge and motivation daily to strengthen our community and become tomorrow’s billionaires. Also on the property is a hidden underground steam room that lights up in different colors and exists right to the pool. He managed to get it open in 2015, but ever since, constantly adding more and more art to the estate. Rediscovered in 2003 and returned to its original owner, the art dealer found the estate in 2012 and immediately acquired it. Renovated and turned into a hotel, the property became inhabitable after Escobar abandoned it.

Alfonso Buitrago, a journalist from Medellín, has recently authored a book about a former schoolmate of Escobar who eventually became his personal photographer. Buitrago vehemently opposes trivializing acts of evil and says it can have far-reaching consequences. On July 10, 50 Medellín officials arrived with diggers to bring down the building, only to discover that Roberto had already beat them to it. A judge had ordered the demolition of the building because it lacked the necessary municipal permit. But behind the bureaucratic maneuver was a desire to put an end to narco tours of the city that showed off Escobar’s many houses, murder sites and even his grave.

When his family learned of his death, several weeks later, they had to pay a large ransom just for a map showing where his body was buried. Visitors may enter the ruins but must exercise care while on the grounds. The walls are filled with holes where people have searched for stashed money; locals note that nobody has ever found any. People can visit Escobar’s room, the now-swampy pool, the guard towers, the bathroom where the bomb was planted – basically the entire estate. Far out into the Caribbean Sea, beyond the bleached white tourist beaches, lies an island whose way of life has remained largely untouched for hundreds of years.

Clothes had been laid out to dry along the chipped blue edge of the pool. Escobar's legacy remains controversial; while many denounce the heinous nature of his crimes, he was seen as a "Robin Hood-like" figure for many in Colombia, as he provided many amenities to the poor. At the entrance, visitors are welcomed by Roberto Escobar, a nearly blind man with square-rimmed glasses, a red cap and a neatly tucked-in shirt. After his ex-wife (a 1990s beauty queen) takes your $50 admission fee, Roberto guides you through the house. The mansion that inadvertently paid tribute to kitsch and retro aesthetics later became a shrine to the most notorious criminal in Colombian history. But for all his fame and money, Escobar was eventually killed by Colombian police in 1993, leaving behind a family, a vast drug enterprise, and his prized property, a home he called Hacienda Nápoles ("Naples Estate") in Puerto Triunfo, Colombia.

There are plans to turn the mansion into a drug museum, theme park, and zoo, complete with Escobar’s menagerie of exotic animals which still run wild in Puerto Tifuno. But his mansion in La Isla Grande, also government owned, has steadily fallen into ruin. Beyond the swimming pool, a series of broken down chalets overlooked the ocean.

Alfonso Ospina served as chief of staff for President Belisario Betancur, whose decision in the early 80s to approve the extradition of drug dealers to the U.S. prompted a violent backlash. Extradition was a huge blow to the narcos who had achieved something like impunity through their murderous intimidation tactics and attempts to undermine the Colombian judicial system. Alfonso had also declined to donate his own money to the right-wing militias fighting to protect ranchers’ large landholdings from the FARC. Those militias later became paramilitary death squads and drug traffickers in their own right. Finally, after he was kidnapped, he refused to deed one of his ranches to his captors.

Silent House 2011 film Wikipedia

silent house

The movie is a remake of a horror film from Uruguay, and both the original and the remake claim to have been shot in a single take. If it is, it's the most amazing single take since "Russian Ark," beginning with an overhead crane shot on a lake shore and then traveling down a road and into a house and following the heroine upstairs and downstairs and into the basement. That would take one hell of a cameraman, and there are all kinds of shots where the screen goes dark and cuts could obviously be concealed. John, now conscious, is wrapped in plastic and sitting in the living room. Sophia gives Sarah a key to a box containing pedophilic pictures of Sarah as a little girl, implying that John sexually abused her. It is suggested that her recent interactions and hallucinations with the little girl and mystery attacker have been a traumatic repressed memory.

Audience Reviews

Sophia also turns out to be a figment of her imagination. John convinces Sarah to untie him, then whips her with his belt. Peter tries to stop him but John mocks Peter's pleas. As his back is turned, Sarah bludgeons his head with a sledgehammer, killing him. Peter begs for mercy and tells her he should have stopped the rape and abuse from the hands of John. Peter’s fate in the aftermath remains a mystery.

Silent House (2011 film)

TikTok “will move to the courts for a legal challenge” when the bill is signed, said Michael Beckerman, TikTok’s head of policy in the Americas, in an internal memo on Saturday seen by the South China Morning Post. Protests last week at Columbia raised concerns of antisemitism after Jewish students said they were subjected to acts of hate, intimidation and harassment. "Silent is complicit, and we can’t allow that. We believe in First Amendment rights. We believe in people being able to express themselves in a peaceful manner. But when we’re talking about hateful rhetoric, when we’re talking about violence, we have to call that out. She called the hateful rhetoric coming out of Columbia "vile." This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

"Silence is complicity," Biden said in a written statement Sunday evening. "Even in recent days, we’ve seen harassment and calls for violence against Jews. This blatant antisemitism is reprehensible and dangerous – and it has absolutely no place on college campuses, or anywhere in our country." I think of most thrillers as bags of tricks and admired the ones in Silent House, but the audience sure didn’t and I don’t entirely hold it against them. Would they have been less angry if the house turned out to be full of vengeful ghosties? I think so, but they still wouldn’t have liked the movie much. Maybe the Blair Witch-Paranormal Activity approach has worn out its welcome.

Rabbi Elie Buechler, director of the Orthodox Union-Jewish Learning Initiative on Campus program at Columbia and the all-women’s Barnard, recommended Sunday that Jewish students stay away from the university until safety conditions improve. WASHINGTON ― President Joe Biden called on Americans to speak out against the "alarming surge of antisemitism" in the U.S. following pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University that prompted the school to cancel all in-person classes Monday out of safety concerns. "Students should feel safe. Communities should feel safe, and you know…we can’t stay silent," Jean-Pierre said. "Obviously, it is a deeply painful moment. He sees that. He understands that, and he will always support and believe in free speech and debate and nondiscrimination on college campuses." White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked by a reporter during a briefing on Wednesday what the president thinks of how the administration at Columbia University in New York City has been handling the protests. The "intruder" drags Peter into the living room before it is revealed that it's actually Sarah herself.

"The president believes that free speech debate and nondiscrimination on college campuses are important. They’re important American values and…we will always be very clear about that here," she said. "But you know, protests must be peaceful, you know. Students must be safe. When we see violent rhetoric, we have to call that out. When we see physical intimidation or grotesque, antisemitic remarks, we have to speak that out." The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2011 and was subsequently purchased by Open Road Films and Universal Pictures for distribution. Silent House premiered in United States theaters on March 9, 2012. It opened at number 5 at the U.S. box office, earning $6.6 million during its opening weekend; it would go on to gross a total of $12.8 million domestically.

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., an outspoken supporter of Israel, condemned the reports of antisemitism at Columbia. "Add some tiki torches and it’s Charlottesville for these Jewish students," Fetterman said on X, formerly Twitter, referring to the 2017 white supremacists protests in Charlottesville, Va. that turned violent. Fetterman called on Shafik to "do your job or resign so Columbia can find someone who will."

Peter and Sarah discover John's body missing in the house. When the power is cut off, the only light source available to them is the flash on a Polaroid camera. Through a series of camera flashes, Sarah sees the young girl and a man in the room. Sarah hides while two men take pictures, presumably pedophilic in nature, of an unseen girl.

Pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses have divided Democrats. Biden's comments are some of his most pointed to date targeting protests that have erupted at college campuses across the country in the months since the Israel-Hamas War began last October. The press secretary was also asked what the president’s personal reaction was to the activity taking place on the college campuses and what his message would be to those peacefully protesting.

White House officials addressed the anti-Israel protests taking place at universities across the country on Wednesday, saying President Biden believes in free speech, but when violent rhetoric and physical intimidation takes place, it must be called out. "Silent House" is another one of those Scream at the Screen movies, in which you want to shout out advice to a character. In this case, a nubile young woman is trapped inside an apparently haunted house for most of the time, and what you want to shout is, Get out of the damn house! Finally, a little beyond the halfway mark, she does escape, running out the front door and flees, weeping and stumbling, down a country road until her Uncle Peter drives along, and they return to the house and she goes back inside. Outside, she meets Peter, who has returned, and sees a young girl on the road who disappears.

Movie Review: Why Were Audiences So Outraged by Silent House?

Maybe people are tired of the subjective, I-am-a-camera thing born of the sudden and universal access to hi-def. Maybe, too, they’re fed up with subjectivity as the basis for a work of art and hunger for the clarity of omniscience, even in a low-down genre like horror. Sarah returns with her father and uncle to fix up the family's longtime summerhouse after it was violated by squatters in the off-season. As they work in the dark, Sarah begins to hear sounds from within the walls of the boarded-up building. Although she barely remembers the place, Sarah senses the past may still haunt the home. Biden has faced increasing pressure from young voters and the left flank of his party over his unwavering support of Israel's war in Gaza following the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel.

Critics Reviews

Sarah tries to shoot one of the men with Peter's gun, then hides in her room and begins to show signs of paranoia and psychosis. She experiences hallucinations of traumatic childhood events, including a bloodstain on the bed and the young girl in the bathtub with beer bottles and bloody water. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on Wednesday, ‘We can’t be silent here,’ when it comes to the violent rhetoric and physical threats taking place at college campus protests.

A Scream at the Screen Movie

It’s odd that the CinemaScore rating for Silent House, a more than decent gimmicky scare picture that opened last Friday, is an “F” — suggesting that critics like me are more excited by formal inventiveness than most of the film-going public. The gimmick here is that the camera follows the main character, Sarah (Elizabeth Olsen), for the entirety of the film, beginning with a striking descent as she sits on a rock staring pensively at the water and finishing … I’m not saying just yet. We’re essentially marooned with the girl as the creaks and footsteps and thumps begin, staring out into the darkness with her, staggering and swerving with her, deprived of a larger perspective. With its distant, disharmonious, ambient score that seems to be operating on another level of reality, the film can make you, like its protagonist, sick with fear. I said the house is "apparently" haunted because … well, you'll see.

Silent House (2011 film) explained

We saw her not long ago in the challenging lead role of "Martha Marcy May Marlene." In that film, she demonstrated she's a gifted actress, and in "Silent House," she performs a rite of passage for many young actresses, as the endangered heroine of a horror film. Soon after, Sarah panics when she hears John falling down the stairs. She tries to leave the house but all exits are blocked, and she hides from an unknown perpetrator. She finds John unconscious with a head wound and runs to the basement in search of the cellar door that leads outside. She finds a bed and other evidence that someone else has been living there, possibly squatters.

It’s b, of course, and evidently the notion that we’ve been with Sarah this whole time and in real time and didn’t see her hack the shit out of her dad and uncle is received by the audience as a violation. While speaking at Biden's Earth Day event, applauded "the power of young people shaping the country," pointing to the "peaceful, student-led protests on campuses like Columbia, Yale, Berkeley, and many others." Soon she's reduced to tiptoeing through the darkness calling out "Uncle Peter?" when not long before she was calling "Dad? Daddy?" This is an optimistic girl. Her name is Sarah, and she's played by Elizabeth Olsen, the younger sister of Mary-Kate and Ashley.

She sees a figure searching for her and escapes out the cellar door. "And echoing the rhetoric of terrorist organizations, especially in the wake of the worst massacre committed against the Jewish people since the Holocaust, is despicable. We condemn these statements in the strongest terms," Bates said. The protests came to a head last week when more than 100 student protesters were arrested and suspended after  Columbia University President Minouche Shafik called in the New York Police Department to clear an encampment on the campus' south lawn. Out of safety concerns, Columbia is holding Monday's classes online instead of in person.

This Is What Happened To Pablo Escobar's Colombia Estate

pablo escobar house

The noise of dynamite on a sunny day blew out a host of buried memories, welcome and otherwise, among those who’d survived Medellín’s long years of violence. Aurelia Puyo, a female guerrilla who’d grown up upper-class before running away to join the guerillas, allegedly targeted the place in an effort to strike at the heart of the establishment. Escobar had phoned and threatened Horacio not to allow certain politicians into the restaurant.

A Journey to Coney Island Creek's Sunken Submarine

But more than 25 years after Mr. Escobar’s death, the six-story building with a penthouse had still caused heated debate, as city officials weighed the potential tourist draw of the site against the urge to move on from a painful past. I was a 21-year-old Peace Corps volunteer when I fell in love with Medellín and the lush countryside that surrounds it. While there, I helped build a school near what would become one of Escobar’s hideouts, and in 2005 I founded the Marina Orth Foundation, an educational foundation for underserved kids. Today, we teach STEM, robotics, English, and leadership in 21 schools. I was just as thrilled (and surprised) when, during the ceremony, I was awarded a medal of courage from Gutiérrez as part of a group of Valientes who stood up for the city during its long ordeal.

Also at the lunch were the widow and children of Colonel Valdemar Franklin Quintero, the murdered commander of the Antioquia state police department. In 1989, when police were being picked off right and left, Colonel Quintero was a symbol of fearless incorruptibility. Eventually, however, Quintero concluded that his days were numbered, so he dismissed his bodyguards, telling them there was no reason their families should lose their fathers. One of his sons and a nephew also participated in the Medellín ceremonies. Medellín has Pablo problems in all strata of society, not just the poor neighborhoods. The current mafia headquarters, the Oficina de Envigado, is located in the rapidly growing nearby town of Envigado, where Escobar grew up.

It was staged under the auspices of Medellín, Abraza Su Historia (Medellín, Embrace Your History), a branding campaign launched by Gutiérrez. The Monaco also served as the starting or ending point for many of the city’s popular narco tours—including one led by Escobar’s brother. The mansion in La Isla Grande, now government owned, has steadily fallen into ruin. Like some kind of coke-fueled Xanadu, the sprawling complex is already being reclaimed by nature. Stepping into the main mansion—it had been decorated with white tile and marble—the cracked walls still show the 1980s color schemes of pastel blue and coral pinks. The lobby leads to an immense courtyard, shaded with palm trees overlooking the Caribbean sea.

He soon graduated to setting up a distribution channel for cocaine himself while establishing smuggling routes to the United States. Mr. Escobar lived for years in the Monaco Building, a white, six-story edifice with a penthouse apartment on top and his family name still inscribed in fading letters on the exterior. Last Tuesday, a white or cream-colored package, about one foot long and wrapped in plastic with metal seals on the ends, was also found. Forensic tests by Miami Beach police determined it did not contain drugs. The safe was hidden beneath the entrance of what had been a large pink mansion consisting of four bedrooms, a pool, six bathrooms and a garage.

With more than 300 rooms for guests and party-goers, no expense was spared, even down to the gold shower heads in the bathrooms. Escobar’s playground resembled a strip from Miami’s South Beach in its 1980s heyday. For his party home on La Isla Grande, Escobar’s plans were no less ostentatious. He commissioned a giant complex featuring a mansion, waterfront apartments, a palm court centered around an enormous swimming pool and helicopter landing pad. With over 300 rooms for guests and party goers, no expense was spared, even down to the gold shower heads in the bathrooms.

Our night at Casa Malca had been a memorable one. And the morning was off to a gorgeous start.

Any pedestrian could walk along the street and pose for a similar photograph – and in fact, you can still do so today, though the fence has gotten higher. The hotel is also complete with a spa, two pools, three restaurants, a private beach that handmade tiki huts dotted around, as well as an underground adult-only grotto. Now - nearly a decade later - the estate was discovered and purchased by art collector, Lio Malca.

To what extent Escobar was a genuine benefactor for the working classes of Colombia, versus the hagiographical image he created around himself, is hard to judge. Certainly his public funeral resembled the passing of a popular king, and not a mass murderer. But his popularity in the working classes also benefitted him when he came to run for public office. Asking Jesús and other islanders on Isla Grande whether El Patron did anything for them, the answer was no. I was struck by the overt friendliness of the people of Orika and by the paradox of their island home. They’ve never had a police force  according to Jesús, yet through the forest was the fortress of the world’s most lethal drug baron.

But he also carefully cultivated a Robin Hood image with the working classes of Colombia. He built deluxe soccer fields in the barrios, and organized teams and leagues for the children. The street vendors of Cartagena, las Palenqueras sell t-shirts bearing the face of El Patron alongside replica jerseys of the Colombian hero and Real Madrid forward James Rodriguez.

The Hacienda also offers visitors a detailed history of Escobar's life and death, all documented through photos, newspaper records, and interviews with people who were close to him. Perhaps most striking is the famous 1993 photo of Escobar's lifeless body after the shootout with the Colombian government that ended his life now prominently displayed on a wall in his former home. At the far side of the island, hidden and secluded between the tropical forest and the Caribbean Sea, lies a grandiose complex of luxury buildings. At the height of his powers, Pablo Escobar was responsible for around 80 percent of the world’s cocaine. He headed the Medellín drug cartel, smuggling over fifteen tons of cocaine into the United States every day.

His name appears on the title of the house and in the paperwork transferring the property to the current owners. It is well known that the former boss of the Medellin Cartel had accumulated such an immense fortune that he hid part of his profits in secret compartments, in the walls of his house, and even buried them in the floor. How can I make my garden look more beautiful?

Even if your house started out with a good—or even great—lawn, you’ll need to reseed it every three to four years to keep it healthy. Luckily, it’s a fairly straightforward DIY-type task that doesn’t take too much time or effort, at least not if you have an average-size yard. Regular mowing, watering, and weeding are all helpful, but they can’t guarantee a lush and green lawn. Once a privacy fence is built, you can further dress it up to make it stand out from the rest in the neighborhood. Hanging baskets provides a spot to display cascading flowers or succulents, and a colorful mural can liven up an otherwise dull façade.

Arcadian Shade

Some of our best landscaping ideas include adding height with planters and baskets and creating spaces where guests can sit, relax, and enjoy drinks and company. Each of these yard landscaping ideas is both attractive and functional, so let them stir your imagination. Then use our best landscaping ideas to help you create the stunning outdoor living spaces you will cherish. Backyard landscaping ideas have to suit the needs and desires of your entire household. Before deciding on a drastic change that limits the use of your backyard, consider everything you want to use it for, and make sure that your landscaping ideas work in harmony with your lifestyle. Adding more landscaping elements to your yard may not necessarily be the answer.

Crinum lilies laugh at drought, don't need fertilizer, and welcome hot, humid summers with lily-like flowers that perfume the air.

You don't want a one-dimensional home, so why would you want one-dimensional landscape design? Add eye-catching layers to your yard with elevated planters and hanging baskets. Elevated planters and hanging baskets create a sea of beautiful color from high to low, and the visual effect gives the impression of waves of blossoms rising and falling all across your yard. If you want to create an immersive escape, this is a foolproof way to get started. As an added bonus, plants love the good drainage and aeration that raised planters provide.

When it comes to planting include a mix of simple flowers and edible plants. If you are looking for plenty of planting but have a thin plot, look to clever narrow garden ideas. One of the best is to put in neat raised beds and layer planting, from tall to mid-height to low to make your flower beds pack a punch. Designer Alison Victoria brought her small urban backyard to life with a clever landscaping idea.

Use raised beds to create a vegetable garden

landscaping design ideas

Lighten up a shady garden with a well-thought-out landscape design and carefully selected plants. Next, you’ll need to decide on a material for the privacy fence. Basic wood and vinyl fences remain popular choices, but modern ideas that include basket weave designs, chevron shapes, and horizontal wood planks have been popular in recent years. Bamboo, repurposed pallets, and other recycled materials are certainly a go-to for sustainable and inexpensive solutions. Whether you're a designer who just finished an amazing project or a homeowner who takes great pride in their garden, we'd love to see it! Concrete’s not just a slab of gray, hard landscaping that looks like a boring sidewalk.

Whether adorning a trellis with fragrant blooms or using it to create a living privacy screen, transform your garden into an enchanting oasis with climbing plants. Mary Alice and Terry Ramsey make full use of raised beds on their North Carolina property. Vegetables, herbs, and flowers are planted side-by-side, providing a riot of color and a continuous harvest during the growing season. Raised beds allow them to bypass the clay and provide richer soil for their vegetables, while also keeping the soil warmer to help prolong the season. Raised beds are a simple landscaping project that is easy to construct from timbers or kits.

Over the last several years, concrete has become more of an art form. Concrete contractors can color and stamp concrete into various designs and styles, further elevating the appearance of your outdoor flooring, and tying your landscaping designs together. From a sleek modern look to a charming English garden, the possibilities are endless, guided by your terrain, your budget, your design inspirations, and your do-it-yourself landscaping know-how. Peg Aloi is a gardening expert and former garden designer with 13 years experience working as a professional gardener in the Boston and upstate New York areas. She received her certificate in horticulture from the Berkshire Botanical Garden in 2018. Getting artsy in a small backyard goes a long way, and the proof is in this stunning patio floor.

But it will also include tricks to keep the garden light and bright, from choosing white-flowering plants to laying pale-colored, light-reflecting stone or wood for your patio. If your garden gets little natural light, you'll need to look specifically for north-facing garden ideas. For your borders, this includes the best shade plants, including the best shrubs for shade that can keep your garden green throughout summer and winter. A partial stone wall props up a pergola for shade, while a garden door beyond makes the cozy fireplace zone feel extra private and serene. To keep the outdoor space of this 1950s ranch in Kansas City feeling open and green, Jeffrey Dungan's team designed it to extend only halfway up past the sitting area. Most people will agree that a green and freshly mowed lawn is an ideal foundation for any yard, but it’s what you do beyond the grass that can really make your visitors and neighbors take notice.

We love this treehouse which looks so Scandi, but you could also add beautiful swings and perhaps even a slide, if you have the space. From creating a DIY art project with the kiddos, to curling up with a good book, it's safe to say that making the most of patio ideas is a must in any backyard. We love how this wall has a bold splash of color, a chic place to sit down, and plants around it.

The calming blue color it adds to a space makes it feel like a vacation in your own backyard. A home with a pool is the place to be in the summer, whether you’re hanging out with friends, reading, or swimming laps. There are a variety of pools out there to suit your specific needs—your ideal backyard pool landscaping may include a diving board, a small pool for the kids, or a specific shape or length.

As its name suggests, this chain is essentially the Drybar of lash extensions. They’ve got their well-trained staff, an extensive menu of lash services/styles/materials, and perfectly appointed pink decor down pat. Throughout their many convenient locations, Blinkbar runs like a well-oiled machine, and I’ve always been pleased with the painless experience and lovely results. (Most beauty editors I know have also tried and approved of this place… Kirbie Johnson of Popsugar fame has named it as a fav). We would recommend this convenient spot to those needing quality extensions applied swiftly and professionally at a reasonable price point.

Owner Sabrina is particularly known for her volume service, so if your lash buzzwords include fluffy, lengthened, and full (but still soft, never scary), she’s your gal. Bombshell’s prices are a bit higher, but the reviews are consistently glowing. Sabrina also offers mobile appointments, in case you’re too busy to get over to mid-city or have a day-of-event. If you are in search of the most affordable eyelashes, thisValue Pack from Eylure is highly recommended.

Also, the owner Gloria Ting, if you’re lucky enough to get lashed by her, is a gem and has a fascinating life story (which makes the appointment fly right by). The Supreme Court could reset homelessness policy in California Los Angeles Times

President Joe Biden, who will speak at the event this evening, has faced growing protests in recent months over his continued legislative support for Israel’s war in Gaza, which has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians and put the population at imminent risk of famine. "This is an innocent young man being held hostage by a terrorist organization and he should be released immediately without condition and without delay," White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said at a briefing Wednesday afternoon. Hamas released a video Wednesday appearing to show one of its Israeli hostages delivering an address in captivity. In the video, a man identifies himself as Israeli-American Hersh Goldberg-Polin before delivering a long statement clearly crafted by Hamas, which has long been designated a terrorist organization by the U.S. and Israel. It also contained a measure to help pave the way to selling off frozen Russian sovereign assets to help fund the Ukrainian war effort, and a new round of sanctions on Iran.

Protesters also unfurled a Palestinian flag from the top floor of the Washington Hilton. In the video released Wednesday, Goldberg-Polin says Netanyahu and his fellow Israeli leaders should be "ashamed" for carrying on with their mission in Gaza while he and his fellow captives are stuck "in underground hell, without water, food or sun." A U.S. official confirmed to CBS News on Wednesday that there are five U.S. nationals still unaccounted for and presumed to be living hostages in Gaza, including Goldberg-Polin. Three other Americans who were in Israel when Hamas launched its Oct. 7 attack — Itay Chen, Judith Weinstein and Gad Haggai — are presumed dead, but their bodies have not yet been recovered. "The moment that we got the video that showed Hersh, we gave it to the FBI hostage fusion recovery cell," Sullivan said. "...I'm not going to get ahead of that assessment to make any judgments about time, you know, recency, etc.  I will let them make those judgments and then when we have something we can share publicly in light of all the sensitivities we'll share it with you."

Ukrainian servicemen told CNN the US House vote to approve military aid provides a much-needed shot in the arm. More than 34,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the Israel-Hamas war began in October, according to the Ministry of Health there. Nineteen members of the House Progressive Caucus who voted against further aid to Israel said Saturday that “we make ourselves complicit in this tragedy” if Congress continues to supply military assistance amid the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Senators could try to strip out the TikTok legislation, but policy analysts view it as unlikely, as quickly approving the foreign aid is a top congressional priority.

A foreign aid package passed by the US House of Representatives will “exacerbate global crises,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said in a statement to CNN on Saturday. Instead of a six-month deadline, TikTok would have roughly nine months, which could be extended by President Joe Biden by 90 days if he determines there’s been progress toward a sale. Also, the bill has now been inserted into a larger foreign aid package, which makes it much harder for lawmakers to oppose the measure. This bipartisan bill is designed to ensure federal contracting dollars intended for women-owned small businesses (WOSBs) are awarded to those firms that meet the U.S. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Saturday celebrated the House's passage of a $95 billion foreign aid package for Ukraine, Israel and the Indo-Pacific. The video may give the young man's family hope, however, as the message he conveys includes a reference to his 200 days in captivity — which suggests it was either filmed on or to mark April 24, exactly 200 days since Hamas launched its attack.

The president has refused to give the newspaper a sit-down interview, breaking a long-standing tradition. But despite the jest inside the room, the event was overshadowed by the Gaza war, with guests arriving to chants of “Shame on you” by hundreds of protesters. Just ask our letter writers, who put the blame for the crisis on political and institutional incompetence, economic equality, lack of community support, an unjust and undersupplied housing market, and the failure to enforce laws that prohibit large encampments. When Caitlyn Jenner arrived, she was surrounded by protesters and the press. Police opened barriers for her to circumvent the crowd and get into the event.

Reasons Meetings in Dallas Are Better Than the Rest

"I wasn't even really listening to what he was saying, I was just hearing his voice," Rachel Goldberg-Polin, Hersh's mother, told CBS News in an interview Thursday about the video. "I haven't heard his voice in six months. He's clearly medically compromised and medically fragile." A U.S. official confirmed to CBS News the White House received the video on Monday, and said the White House has been in touch with the Goldberg-Polin family since it was received. The family also received a copy of the video directly, the official said. After months of delay at the hands of a bloc of ultraconservative Republicans, the package drew overwhelming bipartisan support, reflecting broad consensus. The shootout left four people injured with non-life threatening injuries, with a 36-year-old and a 29-year-old woman transported to a hospital and two other young women released at the scene, officials said.

Look for further updates and additions to this area in the coming months. Special rates are available for school and community group visits, advance reservations required. “The New York Times issued a statement blasting me for, quote, ‘actively and effectively avoiding independent journalists’. Demonstrators condemned Mr Biden for his support of Israel’s military campaign and Western news outlets for what they said was biased coverage and misrepresentation of the conflict. Joe Biden took aim at Donald Trump’s age and legal woes at Saturday night’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, an event ultimately overshadowed by Israel’s war in Gaza. Earlier this week, Biden signed legislation granting $26 billion in emergency aid to Israel, including $14 billion in military assistance.

Many citations to critics, scholars, and media coverage present Navidson as a well-known public figure, with his notoriety further compounded by the film's release; the extent of this public interest is such that academics are supposedly divided into three conflicting schools of thought interpreting his unexplained motivations for returning to the house. The Whalestoe Letters, a compilation of letters written by Truant's mother Pelafina during her committal at The Three Attic Whalestoe Institution, are published both as an appendix to House of Leaves and as a standalone book with additional content. The explorations, already challenged by the maze's inhospitable, vast, and ever-shifting nature, finally led to disaster when one of the crew turned on the rest. After several ordeals, one explorer was killed and another rescued, but the house itself then transformed in a hostile fashion, killing Navidson's brother Tom and forcing the family to frantically escape.

Will Navidson, a character who is a Pulitzer-Prize winning photojournalist, and his partner, Karen Green, a former model, move into the house on Ash Tree Lane in Virginia with their children, Chad and Daisy. They discover that the house is slightly bigger on the outside than on the inside. At first, the hallway seems only a few feet in length but it grows and sparks in Will the need for investigation. Will enlists help from explorers Holloway Roberts, Jed Leeder, and Wax Hook to investigate the hallway.

Zampanò's text claims that The Navidson Record, a documentary film directed by an acclaimed photojournalist named Will Navidson, became an American cultural phenomenon upon its theatrical release in 1993, generating volumes of multidisciplinary academic literature, as well as extensive media coverage in popular culture. In support, Zampanò cites or quotes articles, journals, symposia, books, magazines, TV programs, and interviews, many supposedly dedicated to this film. Zampanò discusses not only Navidson's filmmaking techniques, but also segues into topics such as photography, architecture, Biblical studies, and radiometric dating, often interspersing overwhelmingly esoteric tangents, several of which devolve into nonsensical, page-long lists of only superficially relevant items. Though many of the academic works Zampanò cites appear to analyze the Record purely as a work of horror fiction, Zampanò's writing remains adamant as to its authenticity.

Even as he grows increasingly unstable, Truant remains steadfast in his editorial work, neglecting all else. She turned to filmmaking herself to reconcile her relationship with Navidson, while also showing his footage to literary, artistic, and scientific authorities such as Stephen King, Stanley Kubrick, Douglas Hofstadter, Ken Burns, Harold Bloom, Camille Paglia, Hunter Thompson, Anne Rice, and Jacques Derrida. Navidson, still investigating the house, sought explanations from laboratory analysis, only to learn that samples taken from the maze are older than the Earth itself. Flouting conventions of academic writing, Zampanò narrates the lives of the Navidson family during the events depicted in The Navidson Record, set in April 1990, including unfilmed events sourced from media and public records. The family are Will Navidson; his unmarried partner, Karen Green, a former fashion model; and their two children, Chad and Daisy.

About House of Leaves

The novel is written as a work of epistolary fiction and metafiction focusing on a fictional documentary film titled the Navidson Record, presented as a story within a story discussed in a handwritten monograph recovered by the primary narrator, Johnny Truant. The narrative makes heavy use of multiperspectivity as Truant's footnotes chronicle his efforts to transcribe the manuscript, which itself reveals the Navidson Record's supposed narrative through transcriptions and analysis depicting a story of a family who discovers a larger-on-the-inside labyrinth in their house. Johnny Truant is a tattoo shop employee living in Hollywood who frequently drinks, uses drugs, and has sex with women. He and his friend, Lude, discover The Navidson Record in the room of a recently-deceased man named Zampanò. Johnny takes the manuscript home and begins reading it, becoming more and more obsessed with it as time goes on. He starts compiling a series of footnotes to Zampanò’s text, in which the actions of his own life unfold.

The album Haunted also draws heavily from the novel, featuring tracks called "House of Leaves", "Exploration B" and "5&½ Minute Hallway", and many less obvious references. The video for "Hey Pretty" also features Mark Danielewski reading from House of Leaves (pp. 88–89), and in House of Leaves, the band Liberty Bell's lyrics were also songs on Poe's album. The book was followed by a companion piece called The Whalestoe Letters, a series of letters written to the character Johnny Truant by his mother while she was confined in a mental institution. Arriving at the house to help Navidson measure its dimensions, Tom is said to have improved the family's relationships and mood during his presence. Tom extended his stay to assist in the hallway explorations and subsequent rescue, in which he camped alone for days in the maze to maintain radio contact, built an improvised pulley to assist in the rescue, and, ultimately, saved the Navidsons' children from the house at the cost of his own life.

A segment titled "Contrary Evidence", compiled by the editors themselves, instead contains what appears to be evidence of the Navidson Record's actual existence, with a series of artworks depicting segments or concepts from the film as well as what purports to be a single, bootleg frame from within the film itself. Or, to follow the premise of Mark Z. Danielewski's genre-bending debut, can a book about a book about a film be anything else? House of Leaves is both vast and claustrophobic, crammed with minutiae (footnotes, appendices, poems and letters, and layout trickery) yet cored by a deep, absorbing emptiness, a deliberate void that accommodates, even incorporates, each character's—perhaps even each reader's—expectations, quirks, and fears. We learn about Zampanò himself through his writing about the film, which Johnny ultimately determines does not actually exist. He has a series of women come visit him, read to him, and help him transcribe the manuscript.

Navidson's camera captured himself attempting to read a book titled House of Leaves in total darkness; having lost all supplies, he resorted to burning the book page by page to provide light for reading. Truant, however, debunks The Navidson Record as a wholesale fabrication, citing his own findings that the film does not exist; that Navidson is a fictionalization of the real-life photojournalist Kevin Carter; and that Zampanò outright invented numerous sources and quotes. Truant also determines that Zampanò copied secondary sources to hide his own inexpertise in various subjects. More paradoxically, Truant notes that Zampanò purports to authoritatively write about filmmaking and cinematography despite being blind. At the same time, Truant's own factual errors, limited knowledge, and open admission to adulterating Zampanò's work also throw his own reliability into question.

He experiences a series of episodes in which he breaks with reality; he thinks events occur then immediately finds out they did not occur, so much so that the reader is often unsure of what is happening in the reality of the novel. Johnny sometimes sees or experiences “the beast”—a type of animal or being with a threatening, destructive presence. Johnny’s physical health deteriorates, and he leaves his apartment less and less, finally getting fired from the tattoo shop. Eventually, Johnny decides to put the manuscript in storage and goes on a quest to Virginia, to find the house on Ash Tree Lane recorded in the documentary The Navidson Record. While travelling, he encounters a band who are in possession of the manuscript he has been working on; they report that the manuscript has been distributed.

The Navidson Record, his film of these explorations, becomes the intense focus of a blind man called Zampanò, who writes about the footage with lengthy, academic precision. When Zampanò is found dead in his apartment, troubled tattoo artist Johnny Truant discovers his notes and inherits the fixation. As Truant becomes increasingly obsessed with the story, so too does the reader. Though Truant attributes Zampanò as the author of The Navidson Record, Truant offers few concrete details about Zampanò's character or past, citing only information learned from his former acquaintances. These include neighbors and various students and social workers, exclusively female, who volunteered as readers for Zampanò's research.
